Pete Maravich had a legendary start at Louisiana State for his college career. He was a spectacular showman earning one NBA scoring title and played ten seasons in the league with five trips to the NBA All-Star Game. His playground-style moves, circus shots, and behind the back hotdog passes were considered outrageous during his era. But with that style he managed to produce huge numbers, first as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history and later as a potent force for both the Atlanta Hawks and the New Orleans Jazz.

Welcome to the auction block…this authentic Pistol Pete Maravich game worn purple road jersey (#7). He played for the Jazz between 1974-80. Pistol Pete Maravich game used memorabilia is truly a holy grail. In provenance, the jersey is intricately tied to the New Orleans Jazz team right before they moved to Utah.

During his tenure with the Jazz, Pete wore jersey #44 and #7. Of note, the #7 was also worn by Toby Kimball during the first month of the Jazz inaugural season. Kimball was released shortly thereafter and no one wore #7 during the rest of the season. Fast forward to the next season 1974-75, where  the jersey was recycled to Pistol Pete and worn during pre-season as well as games throughout the regular season. Jerseys were under-capitalized and the Jazz were very frugal with their equipment.  This is substantiated by the Jazz logo on the front. This one features a simplified “J” in the form of the note. Yes, that season the logo/team name was further enhanced but there are photos of the Jazz using two different font styles during this time.

The front features the Jazz logo and jersey #7 sewn-on in vinyl. A double Sand-Knit tag is sewn on the left front tail. The top is the exclusively tag for New Orleans and the bottom showcases the proper [size] 44. To highlight the team’s colors, green and yellow ribbing is around the arms and neck openings. Overall, it shows tremendous wear. The condition of the identifiers are solid because they are vinyl without cracking which is normal. The back shows moderate creasing on the #7 and the name on the back has been removed which was customary for the team to do. Overall, a tremendous fresh-to-market holy grail jersey that would help complete a top tier NBA HOF game used collection.
