Monte “Iron Jaw” Stickles was a multiple weapon, 2-time All-American and Captain for the “Fighting Irish” in the late 1950’s. He was a fierce blocker, a clutch pass catcher, a reliable kicker and an enforcer to be reckoned with. He also holds a distinction of using a variety of different face masks during his N.D. career; no mask and single bar in ’56, white single bar and white 2-bar in ’57 and ’58, gray “Joe Perry” upturned 1-bar mask and regular BD-9 gray 2-bar in 1959. But the masks are just part of the story. Stickles’ early Notre Dame career saw him wear the coveted MacGregor H612 with the now famous contrasting black iron cross atop the crown. Entirely leather padded with 8-point crown suspension, this headgear was the Cadillac of helmets in the 1950’s. Stickles wore it in 1956 and 1957, and according to his recollection, wore it again during spring practice of 1958, balking at the new Wilson bubble eared helmets which the Irish were switching to. Stickles also adopted a 2-bar for protection against further injury to a mouth wound for a short period of time. For the regular season in 1958, Stickles was forced to wear a Wilson as did all his teammates, and then again switched in 1959 to an RK Riddell at the start of the Kuharich era at South Bend. When the team switched to Wilson headgear, Stickles kept this leather relic as a keepsake. His MacGregor single bar mask is still affixed to the helmet with original screws. The helmet did various stints in bars with its 1959 Riddell “green clover” counterpart, and ended up in a Poughkeepsie, NY steamer trunk in the cellar of relatives of “The Iron Jaw”. Stickles has signed the helmet: Monty Stickles AA (All-American) #80 Fighting Irish 1957 In eminently displayable condition despite a brittle and aged leather interior. After being a #1 draft pick of the S.F. 49ers in 1960, Stickles wen on to a fine 9-year NFL career, but he never wore a leather helmet again. That would be reserved forever for use under the Golden Dome of Notre Dame. As important a game-worn Notre Dame football specimen as has ever been offered. Sourced directly from Monty Stickles through ha long time friend. Go Irish!
