SKU: 6562 Category:

One of the toughest Hall of Fame signatures in any format, period, McGowan was an innovator who introduced a colorful umpiring style bordering on the agressive and downright pugnacious. In a career spanning 30 AL seasons, he was considered an “Iron Man”, never missing a game for 16 years and 2541 consecutive innings. This letter is a gem, with incredible baseball commentary. Dated Dec 7th, 1946, he commends NFL NY Giants player Roman Bentz on his decision to enroll in McGowan’s Florida-based “School For Umpires”, and in the process, offers us a ton of insight into his profession as well as the era. McGowan died in 1954 and was not inducted until 1992. As such, these two crisp clean pages, closing with a stellar example of his rare signature, should stir some serious action amongst serious collectors. Letter and autograph rate 9+/10.
