The “Hot Rod”, Rowdy Roddy Piper was one of the WWE’s greatest in-ring specialists mixing technical skills with theatrical prowess. He arrived in the WWE as the Rock ‘n’ Wrestling era began to boom, Piper was perfectly at home. The splash, color and showmanship of the ’80’s was tailor-made for his wild-child persona. It was during this time that he went from being a star in the territories to a Superstar around the world.
Roddy Piper’s over-the-top antics and out-of-control behavior made him the WWE Superster fans loved to hate. But one small and very special audience was always in Piper’s corner no mater what: his family. For Piper’s wife Kitty and their four children (Anastacia, Ariel, Colton and Falon), wrestling’s greatest heel was their biggest hero.
Here is a custom kilt that Piper wore during his career in the wrestling ring. The kilt is from early in his career (Mid-Atlantic days 1986-93) and true to the Scottish tradition made out of tartan wool. He had only one made in this style. Of note, although this was worn countless times during his career we can pinpoint two notable match-ups. It was worn in an iconic battle against the Mountie in which he won the Intercontinental title at the Royal Rumble in 1992. And worn again to the ring in Wrestlemania 8 versus Brett the Hitman Hart in which he lost.
The kilt looks like regal battle field attire and is well pleated and striped proper in red, blue, green and white. Three leather buckles which are well worn fasten it together with two in front and one in rear. On the inside, his name is sewn in red “R. Piper” along the waistband portion for easy identification. His red and black kilts are in the WWE HOF museum making this a rare opportunity to own one from a limited supply custom made during his career.
To complete the outfit, also included is his classic “Hot Rod!” tee-shirt which dates to circa 1986. It was worn in the ring by Piper features the yellow/red “Hot Rod!” on the front and does show some sweat wear under the arms. Of note, the interior tagging shows it is a Hanes [size] Large.
Both of these items are presented directly from his family and includes a signed provenance letter from them.
