Approaching ringside from west coast Dublin, weighing 232 pounds, Rowdy Roddy Piper….
Rowdy Roddy Piper was born Roderick George Toombs. He first appeared in the ring in Canada at the age of 15. He wore a kilt – you’ve got to be tough to pull that off – and bagpipes played as he walked in, hence Roddy Piper.
When he joined the WWE in the ’80s, he was a villain, going up against Hulk Hogan, who at the time, at least, was the hero. But Piper’s gift as a performer went beyond the ring. He had an interview show, “Piper’s Pit.” Piper’s interview technique was simple – agitate the subject and get him to fight.
In 1991 Piper was involved in a motorcycle accident, but was still present at matches at WrestleMania VII and SummerSlam. He renewed his feud with Ric Flair and at the 1992 Royal Rumble defeated The Mountie for his first, and only, Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship. He lost it soon after to Bret Hart and WrestleMania VIII. Following his title loss to Hart, Piper disappeared from the WWF. He made his return playing the bagpipes at SummerSlam.
Presented are items from his personal collection that were kept by his family. This particular piece is a classic “Get Rowdy” tee-shirt which dates to circa 1991. It was worn in the ring by Piper features an artistic portrait of him on the front and does show some wear (fade etc.). Of note, the interior tagging is removed. The shirt includes a family provenance letter and a photo match from them for ease of authentication. Size tag was removed from the collar but the shirt measures approximately 22″ across the chest and 28″ from shoulder to bottom of the shirt.
Authentication: Provenance Letter & 100% Authentic Team
