Roy Campanella, Casey Stengel and Leo Durocher Signed Ball
Out of stock
A very interesting multi-signed ball this is. It’s a bona fide ONL (Giles) baseball, but it bears an additional stamping in the north panel citing "Texaco Command Appearance 11/23/57" – clearly an off-season date. The ball is in moderately reduced condition with a few minor abrasions, but the most notable blemish is a pronounced stain in the west panel where, fortuitously, there are no signatures. Readily interpreted in this ball’s signing is that Texaco sponsored a television show in the late ’50s and it follows that the four signers of this ball appeared on that telecast. Specifically, the opposing managers of the 1957 World Series signed the keepsake. In red ballpoint, Milwaukee’s Fred Haney signed the south panel while Casey Stengel ("5") penned the east panel. Leo Durocher – the long-time, fiery dugout commander of the Dodgers and Giants – signed the sweet spot. Leo, at that time, was "between jobs," as they say – doing a little color commentary over the airwaves. The most captivating autograph on this ball, however, is that placed by the inimitable Roy Campanella who was then holder of three National League MVP awards. Campy’s signature, in the north panel, is mildly interrupted by the ball’s surface anomalies, but it’s yet very strong – arguably "6".
The reader will not fail to reflect that this aggregate signing took place only two months prior to Campanella’s tragic automobile accident.
