Description
William H. Perkins, Jr. (1921-2009) was an esteemed and well-respected lobbyist, historian, and humanitarian. During his 50-year career, he amassed one of largest private collections of presidential and political memorabilia. He was present at the founding of the United Nations. Mr. Perkins had the honor to meet 11 United States Presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. Presented are items direct from his renowned collection.
Samuel H. Shapiro was the 34th Governor of Illinois, serving from 1968 to 1969. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Shapiro was elected the 38th Lieutenant Governor of Illinois in 1960 and again in 1964, and took office as governor when the previous governor Otto Kerner, Jr. resigned to accept appointment to the federal appellate court. Shapiro thus became the second Jewish governor Illinois (Henry Horner being the fast). Illinois thereby became the first state to have had two Jewish governors; New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island have each since elected at least a second governor of the faith.
Presented is an 8×10 photo of Shapiro that was personally signed and inscribed to Perkins in silver pen (“8”). The photo itself has a small portion missing on the front near his ear.
