Shemp Howard Signed Check, Three Stooges

SKU: 25932 Category:

Shemp Howard, of Three Stooges renown actually plied a lengthy and successful screen career quite removed from Moe and Larry. Though the three of them performed vaudeville for several years in the ’20s, it wasn’t until 1947 that the comedy filmette trio was composed of Shemp, Moe and Larry. Shemp Howard (1895-1955) enjoyed a public persona characterized by the bungling estupido. In fact, he was capably professional and graciously considerate in his private life. It was during 1947, their threshhold year, that Shemp wrote this check to the Screen Actor’s Guild. Fully detailed in his hand, the check was drawn on his personal Bank of America account. The medium itself was perfectly detached at the perforation, and its only qualification is a straight vertical crease which, though traversing his signature, is virtually undetectable on the front. A punch-hole cancellation was imposed at the left side, and a stamped cancellation appears toward the center – but neither encroach upon the signature. This one has been authenticated (and encapsulated) by PSA, but it is without a quality evaluation. Arbitrarily, we assess the strength of this signing as “8” – perfectly clean and legible, but just a mild measure faint. The collector pursuing check signatures of entertainment celebrities must afford this opportunity strong consideration.
