Not just yer reg’lar Hornsby single-signed ball, mind you. This one’s special. It specifically dates to the first game of the Cubs’ 1929 season, marking Hornsby’s first appearance in a Chicago uniform. It also marked the starting point of another National League MVP year for “The Rajah”, the second in his already fabled career, as he stroked a lusty .380 in leading the Cubs to their first pennant since 1918. The medium is a heavily toned ONL (Heydler) ball – no doubt game-used for that tilt – and handled by the pitcher of record, fellow Hall of Famer, Burleigh Grimes. A notation on the south panel definitively states “1929 Tuesday April 16th Pitcher Grimes vs. Pittsburgh.” Our research has determined this was indeed the season opener at Wrigley versus the Bucs. Hornsby’s bold black signature fills a side panel, and we’re told by the authorities it has been mildy enhanced at the letters “R”, “o”, and “H”, yet is authentic. His rare autograph, the presumed enhancement notwithstanding, is fully legible, meriting an easy 7/10 in quality. Likewise, the side panel inscription (in an undetermined hand) solidly rates 7+/10. A vintage signed game ball, with inherent provenance such as this, doesn’t come along every day, nor does a ballplayer like Rogers Hornsby. The complete player, he was a two-time Triple Crown winner (1922 and ’25) and two-time MVP, (1925 and 1929), winning seven batting titles, including four in a row, and averaging better than .400 three times in a row. His peerless lifetime .359 still stands as the National League’s highest.
This is a unique relic from a threshold year in the life and career of one of the greatest players of the 20th Century.
