Description

Shortly before his 1948 passing, Babe Ruth collaborated with author Bob Considine to finalize the Babe’s definitive biography. The book itself is one of the hobby’s staples. Of considerable exception, however, is the volume we now present. Directly from the original recipient, we offer this copy of “The Babe Ruth Story” that Ruth autographed. This particular copy seems unhandled (Near Mint), but its dust jacket is about VG due to a couple moderate tears. Our consignor was, in 1948, a meer 16-year-old girl, and her father worked for the Bonat Restaurant, which was situated near Penn Station in New York City – an eatery that Ruth frequented. Her father bought this book, and young Loraine Bauer then inked her autograph request on the left side of an end page. In accommodation, and appearing directly opposite (on the first title page), Ruth penned his magnificent signature, to include a personalization “To Loraine.” Obviously, this autograph was placed in 1948 – a time when the moribund Babe Ruth was most likely consumed with discomfort and despair. An autograph such as this – radiating to a strength and vitality of “10” – re-affirms the Babe’s sincerest acknowledgement – right down to a single fan.
