The history of basketball card production has been a function of emerging superstars – players who transcend the game to become the centerpiece of national acclaim. Topps abandoned basketball after their dismal 1981-82 release, and the field was essentially open to confectionery competitors as that decade progressed. Meanwhile, the University of North Carolina was grooming a phenom who promised to become the standard-bearer of the pastime. And as the youngster, Michael Jordan, graduated to the NBA, the peripheral Fleer Gum Co. seized the initiative to re-invent the basketball card.

Typifying Fleer’s bubbly-bright issues, we present these three basketball units from their mid-late ’80s productions. As should be expected, this collection was initially compiled with utmost care in their handling. The cards are virtually pack-fresh; their only mild qualification is a few deviations from ideal centering. It may be assumed that all these cards are minimally NM/MT, and the only variable of note is centering. We therefore detail the major stars in this collection on that premise:

trong>1987-88 – 55/45 or better – #’s 1 Abdul-Jabbar, 9 Charles Barkley, 37 Patrick Ewing, 56 Magic Johnson, and 80 Akeem Olajuwon. 60/40 – #’s 11 Larry Bird, 35 Julius Erving, trong>59 Michael trong>Jordan (trong>PSA NM-MT 8), 68 Karl Malone, and sticker #2 Michael Jordan.

trong>1988-89 – 55/45 or better – #’s 17 Michael Jordan, 20 Scottie Pippen, and 120 Michael Jordan A. S. 60/40 – #’s 57 Reggie Miller, 115 John Stockton, and sticker #7 Michael Jordan.

trong>1989-90 – 60/40 – #21 Michael Jordan. 70/30 sticker #3 Michael Jordan.
