Or, more precisely, our title should say six signed index cards and one insert sticker. We elaborate on this high-energy group to highlight a trong>Hank Greenberg autograph that the great slugger provided on a 1980 Fleer sticker card (citing the 1945 World Series). The card itself is in NM condition, and Greenberg’s signature, in fine felt tip, is about “trong>8”. Then, to the half dozen 3″ x 5″ index cards, we report that all of them were signed on the unlined side, and all of them are clean and immediately legible. The cards are all EX or better – no creases, blemishes or conspicuous corner wear. (A couple of them are lightly toned.) Of particular note is the robust quality of these signatures – for all of them (with the arguable exception of one), these were scribed by men who demonstrated a strong and beautiful control of their penmanship. Detailed, these include (all ballpoint, unless qualified) trong>Ernie Lombardi (obviously, signed before his 1986 induction), trong>Joe Medwick (with salutation), trong>George Sisler, trong>Ray Schalk (personalized with note), trong>Pie Traynor (aesthetically, the finest Traynor we’ve ever seen; this one is likely fountain pen), and trong>Zack Wheat (with salutation; appears to be felt tip). All of these are “trong>9” or stronger, and all promise high awards if professionally graded. As a collected unit in itself (excluding the Greenberg signed bubblegum card), these were likely attained in a narrow span of time. The best clue is divulged on the Ray Schalk signing. On the reverse of his index card, there appears a polite handwritten request from a certain “Stanley Taylor.” Young Taylor (or more likely, one of his guardians) noted the date “June 17 Fri.” The candidate years, for at least Ray Schalk’s autograph, are 1960 or ’66 – the only years (logically) that June 17th fell on a Friday.
