Vintage 1963 Photo of The Beatles At Abbey Road Studios By Philip Gotlop

By mid-1963 The Beatles were quickly becoming a pop phenomenon. Photographs of these four boys from Liverpool were published in every newspaper and magazine. Around this time the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein was developing his idea to publish a monthly magazine through their rapidly growing fan club. Epstein, a marketing genius, hired independent writer John Dean as head writer for his new publication, “The Beatles Monthly.” With the enormous amount of photos already published of The Beatles, the first problem was to photograph them in a way that had not been done already. To remedy this John Deam employed the services of photographer Philip Gotlop. At 50 years old, Gotlop was considered a “senior statesman” as far as pop photographers were concerned. Gotlop had made a name for himself in the area of glamour photography and nudes. The only other pop star Gotlop was known to had photographed at that time was Eddie Cochran. Gotlop was invited to photograph The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios on July 1, 1963. The photos from that session became the property of NEMS and were featured in various editions of “The Beatles Monthly” magazine. It was around the same time that a young photographer named Dezo Hoffman was hired as The Beatles official photographer. Before his death, Gotlop photographed another new band by the name of Genesis. Our offering is an original photograph from Gotlop’s session of July 1, 1963. The photograph features the four Beatles posed in front of Ringo’s drum kit with an enlarged wall display of The Beatles first Parlophone release “Please, Please Me.” The photo is an 8” x 10” glossy paper photo and is in NRMT condition. The reverse side of the photo had been hand stamped “Copyright Held By Philip Gotlop London.” A wonderful and rare vintage original of the fabulous Beatles.
