William Taft Signed, Inscribed and Dated Cut (as Chief Justice)

William Howard Taft (1857-1930; presidential tenure 1909-13; tenure as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court 1921-30). The surface for this signature is provided by a clean manila-colored, unlined index card (3" x 5"). The signature (as "Wm. H. Taft") is 1-7/8" in length; it is complemented by a non-personalized salutation and, most significantly, the written date, "Aug. 18th 1922" – all of which were placed in his hand thereby isolating the vintage to his chairing as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
