For those whose fantasies have wandered to the magic of ‘the basket catch,’ this is the ‘basket.’ It is a Willie Mays fielder’s glove from the late 1960’s, and professional authorities have declared that it was made in 1968. Precisely, the glove is a MacGregor Brunswick “crown” (inlaid) Model KC1. It measures 12 1/2″ and the webbing is characterized as a dual-post, triple-bar style. As is evident in our photo, this one has certainly provided duty for Say Hey. It is used, but it hasn’t sustained any damage. Providing utmost assurance of the glove’s legitimacy is its attending letter. This letter, a one-page LOA under San Francisco Giants letterhead and signed by Willie Mays, outlines all of the glove’s details – noting its kangaroo hide material and the placement of markered identities. (And, convincingly, the LOA’s details exactly correspond to the unique qualities of the glove.) On the reverse of the small finger, Mays placed his name and, naturally, “24.” Likewise, he markered his name on the reverse of the thumb. Then, more recently, he signed the front surface of the little finger. (This autograph is in felt tip. It’s clean but a bit subdued because of the background hue.) The LOA, as should be expected, is written in the first person and signed by Mays – the signature projecting at a strength of “10”.
