Similar to Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky revolutionized his sport. While the game of hockey has seen plenty of superstar players grace the ice, none has made a lasting impact like Gretzky, who is equally given the nickname “The Great One.” Possibly no athlete has even been given a more fitting nickname than the hockey icon. Beginning in 1979-80 in Edmonton, Gretzky established himself as a winner. During his stay north of the border, the Edmonton Oilers captured the Stanley Cup four times during one five year span. Gretzky is also the game’s top all-time scorer and won the MVP a record nine-times.
The offered 1995-96 [size] “56” Los Angeles Kings jersey was worn by The Great One during the height of his popularity. When Gretzky had moved to Los Angeles it created quite a stir in the United States. The jersey has a size 56 tag in the collar but sizes out larger with the sleeves which have been shortened. The left chest features a captain “C” patch. The rear hem of the jersey has the CCM and NHL crest on both sides. On the inside of the rear hem is the Kings [set] 1 tag from the 95-96 season along with a Velcro patch on the right side and a black patch with a blue TT and pink P. These are the initials of his children. All of these items are only seen on Wayne Gretzky’s game jerseys. The jerseys also show game wear consistent with other Gretzky game jerseys.
The jersey was signed in black felt tip and dated (in his handwriting) on the back number in black felt tip (“9”).
A letter from Bob Case (Vice President of International Boxing Association) also accompanies the jersey as authentication. He explains:
The Wayne Gretzky jersey was taken to Wayne by me. He autographed it and dated it. He looked over and assured me it was game used. Wayne lives by me in Lake Sherwood and is a wonderful guy. Sincerely, Bob Case
Authentication: Bob Case signed provenance letter and JSA authentication.
